So Much to Post About…

…and so little time to write it!

Wish I had a direct connection from my brain to here. Oh, wait. No, that wouldn’t be good.

Ahhh, never-mind.

Oh, Dave and I got to see Amy Grant in concert last night! Not that Dave was thrilled with seeing it, but he did say he enjoyed it. I thought it was real good.  She is so funny. I did not know that about her. A very good concert with good friends, and it was in an outdoor amphitheater on a beautiful evening. Good times.

Harrison missed baseball practice on Thursday and then the first game this morning (Saturday). He got sick on Wednesday. It started with a  sore throat and then came the gunk and a cough.  He JUST DID THIS.  I am so sick of snot. Oh… and you know it… the little sweetie decided to share with his brothers… so now JJ has it! (He just did this too!) Now I am all over them with garlic, vitamin C, Vicks and my special potion (ya… not really mine… but we call it “mama’s potion”! Mostly just to scare the kids).

I am very bummed that Harrison missed his first game. It took a lot for me to send the email to his coach last night and tell him he wasn’t coming. But if he’s sick – he’s sick. What can I do? The coach was nice and said he understood, and also said that his son – who had the flu all week – would not be their either. No sense in having a relapse. This is true. I will get over it and there will be other games.

Our study on the American Revolution is supposed to end Friday, however, we are not done with our Living Book and are enjoying it very much. The boys asked if we could have another week of this study. I am considering it. It’s been a good study. The other night we made a ground beef type stew (with veggie meat) and then made “fire cakes” to dip in the stew/soup. Fire cakes are bread that the American Soldiers ate during the American Revolution. They are just flour and water (salt if they were lucky) and then cooked over-or in the fire. We cooked ours in the oven. They were fun to eat with our soup, but would get old if that were all we had to eat!

It may be a good thing that Harris couldn’t make his game today, as I have been sick with a migraine. They seem to be making me nauseous more now than they ever did. Eeeuuuwea. No fun. I did make a big pot of chicken noodle soup (with tons of garlic) this afternoon, but proceded to spill an entire bowl of it all over my lap and burn my legs. Idiot. I am going to go take a nap now. I’m just not right. (and no comment from you about that, Eddie.)

Chow all. Life will be back on track tomorrow I am sure.

Gerrit gets a hair cut!

june-A 021-b

Isn’t that better? You can see his beautiful blue eyes now!

WAY better than this…

May25-09 090-b

(although, in this light his eyes really show up nicely, don’t they?… and he is rather cute here… and…well, come to think of it… I think he will be cute to me no matter what his hair is like!)

But just so you know… he was okay with the “trim”.  He didn’t want it short, but was ready for it to be out of his eyes for awhile. Bless his heart!

Somehow I think he looks older now. Can you believe he grew 3/4 of an inch in one month? He is now 5′  7 1/2″ and he JUST turned 13!

Not sure I like that he is growing up so fast.

Let’s see… update on the cooties around here.

The one who got it first is doing fine now. We knew he was back to 100% when his humor came back!

The second one to get it is doing better… but still has the lingering deep cough.

The third one is Gerrit… and he is not a happy camper right now.(He still blames his brothers!)  But I must say that he has been SO good about doing all my natural remedies up until a few minutes ago! He say’s after all of this junk he drinks, gargles, eats and smells… he is still producing massive amounts of snot! And… his ears now hurt too.

(um… some of you may think I don’t give them any medication… I do…especially at night so they can get a good nights sleep. But during the day I try to pump them full of natural remedies. All I know is to try and fix it myself first… and if that doesn’t work… I am fine with hauling them off to the doctor!

So… we shall see with that one.

We have babies in the garage.

june-A 006-b

The little Warbler Mama came back again this year and built her nest in the same spot… although changed around a bit since the husband cleaned the garage a few months ago.

My concern is that these babies will meet the same demise as last years babies did. Once they left the nest… and fluttered around on the ground for while to find out how to “take off”… our dogs got them.

Yes. The dogs. I rescued little birds all day last year on Fathers day. Running around the yard and snatching baby birds out of the mouths of my labs. It was awful. I think I rescued the same little guy three different times!

Hopefully one or two of them lived and went on to have a happy life!

So this year we will probably do the same thing. Normally when there is something or someone we don’t want the dogs to bother… we lock them up in the garage for awhile. But not knowing when these little guys are going to be ready for their departure from the nest makes it a bit hard. Plus the fact that the nest is in the garage!

Okay… on to cold and cold prevention remedies.

I have been trying to get a LOT of garlic into the boys – well, into me too actually – and have put it into just about everything we’ve been eating lately. (Thankfully we like garlic!)

The other day I made some Hummus and Guacamole that were inundated with fresh garlic.

june-A 030-b

Then I made chili with enormous amounts of garlic in it.

june-A 048-b

***Okay, let me stop here and just say… I am no gourmet chef!! I cook what JJ calls “the ugly necessities”! No froo-froo here, mind you… I cook to fill the proverbial tanks! And I am no fancy photographer either… so combine the two and… well… I’m sorry… but it just ain’t pretty.

Maybe someday I’ll get better at either or both of those!! ***

I am leading up to the concoction I made for Gerrit today. In my attempts to get even more garlic into him… I made him a “garlic tea“! Yes… I did. (I should have googled it… maybe it’s out there with a better way to make it… Or, I might have found out that you should NEVER drink garlic and ginger prepared together this way!! I don’t know… but whatever!)

And like always… I take what I make! So I joined him.

I boiled garlic and ginger in a pot of water for several minutes. Poured it out into mugs and sweetened it with (lots of) honey. It wasn’t that bad. Really. Gerrit drank two mugs of it! You could definitely taste the garlic… but it wasn’t so strong you couldn’t drink it.

june-B 020-b

So… there you have it! And now I’m off to take spinach enchiladas (with garlic, of course) out of the oven for dinner.

Here’s a Snippet…

As much as I’d like to give you a great and entertaining post today…

I am a bit too busy for that – just right now.

So… I will leave a small snippet of what is going on here at the “Newie Zoo” today. This is mainly for a couple of you that tend to worry if I haven’t left a post in a few days! (And yes… it is a blessing to have friends and family that care enough to worry about you when they don’t hear from you!)

1. Taking care of three kids with colds at different stages:

  • One has an ear infection already. Been to the doctor and is on antibiotics. At least he told me it hurt before it got REAL bad like it usually does. (But… it’s been a year and a half since his last one!! So… Yaay.)
  • One has bad congestion in his chest and after a rough night and fever, is coughing horribly today. He refuses to believe he is actually sick and is hard to rope and bring in!
  • The third one just started his cold today. He has gone threw a box of tissues already and is quite cranky that his brothers “gave” this too him!

2. Making all the potions and remedies I know of:

  • I’ve made “Mama’s Potion“, Hummus (full of garlic), cinnamon capsules and Garlic Soup for them.
  • As well as chest rubs with Vicks, supplements, herbal tea, Airborne, and a glass of water every half hour.

3. Determined to give all my ailing fruits and veggies a proper burial in a recipe or freezer:

So far;

  • zucchini/rice bake
  • sweet potato puree in freezer
  • 12 over ripe bananas mashed and in freezer
  • 5 lbs of apples (about to die) peeled, cored and chopped – ready for freezer and a cake.
  • Guacamole (with LOTS of garlic) done and almost consumed!

4. A mountain of laundry to climb:

  • No explanation needed here… boys = lots of dirty clothes.

SO… I’m off to the kitchen again! It was nice to sit here for awhile and rest while I posted this!

I have some pictures I can’t wait to show you… and a new recipe to share… but it will have to wait until later! Maybe this evening I can get some pictures on here.

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

A Scary Morning

Friday morning started out like most of my mornings! No alarm to wake me… just naturally wakeing up at about the same time every day! It’s great, because I don’t HAVE to get up and rush off to school or work! I can take my mornings easy and spend time in worship before I start my day with the boys. Truthfully, that is what gets me through the day! My time with God that is. I know I am incapable of teaching very much on my own, but with God guiding me, I am not worried about it at all. Okay… sometimes I worry about it… but I know I should trust Him and that is my main goal!

Well, I had finished my quiet time, and I went to my computer to send out an email or two before I started breakfast. A couple of minutes into it, I thought I heard a crash type sound in the other end of the house. I hopped up thinking the stinking cats might have jumped up on my hutch or something… but when I got to the living room, I saw nothing out of place and not a soul in there, not even a cat. But I did notice someone in the boys bathroom. So I chalked up the sound to – whoever it was – being a noisy door closer. I regret that now.

I went back to the computer and had barely sat down when I heard an unmistakable crash. Loud and solid. I rushed, once again into the living room and found my Gerrit on the floor with a chair on top of him.

Heart stops. Fear grips. Shaking starts.

He is hot yet clammy. Not making any sense with his words. Not really even making words at first. JJ comes running up the stairs, rubbing his eyes… asking about the noise. I send him for his big brother to help me get Gerrit to a bed.

We get him settled on a bed and he tells me that he woke up VERY thirsty. He came upstairs to get a drink, but had to go to the bathroom real bad, so did that, but realized while in there that he wasn’t right. He tried to make it to the couch, but didn’t quite get there.

He drank a glass of water and then slept for an hour or so.

When he woke up I fed him and then the other boys and I went in the guest room with him and did some school in there! It was quite fun to all be on the bed for school! But even though Gerrit seemed ok, I couldn’t help but have some concern.

It wasn’t until around that time that I noticed a cut on his face. It looked like a cat got him good. He did not know how he got it and neither did any of the other boys. Well, after awhile, he wanted to get up and stretch and said he was feeling a lot better now that he had eaten and rested. I told him we were going to get him in an Epsom salt bath before he ran out of energy. As I went in to start his water for him, I see that the bathroom is in great disarray.

After some contemplating over what might have happened, he and I figure out that the noise I heard the first time was him passing out in the bathroom! He fell forward and cut his face on a candle holder that is on the back of the toilet. The glass ring of the candle holder matched perfectly over his cut. Oh my goodness… I was feeling terrible for not checking on the crashing sound the first time. I may have been able to prevent him from falling the second time. Poor kid.

Well, turns out he seems fine. He has a cold and gave it to his two younger brothers now, but he has not had any more episodes like that. Thank goodness. I’d rather get my finger drilled again than have that sinking in my gut feeling after finding him on the floor.

If it had been JJ… I wouldn’t have worried so. I know that sounds harsh, but see… he has low blood sugar and I know what to do for him when he gets like that. He has passed out a few times. Not that I like it – mind you – it’s just that I am more well equipped to handle it if I know what it is.

I still hold out that Gerrit’s had to do with him being somehow dehydrated. Maybe sleeping with his mouth open since he couldn’t breath threw his nose. I really see no connection between this and his Chiari Malformation or Syringomyelia. Although, I have to admit… it’s always in the back of my mind.
